A short grammar of the Gaelic language, 18th century
A grammar of the Gaelic language, as it was understood in the 18th century. Interestingly, the English word 'Gaelic' is written as Galic. Author and date unknown.
'Antiquity, genius and affinity of the chief surviving Celtic dialects', 19th century
Bound manuscript volume, titled 'A Catalogue of Gaelic Books', 1899
This is a catalogue of books published in Scottish Gaelic, including titles, authors, and year of publication. Previous historical records have recorded it as D. Maclean's Typographia Scoto-Gadelica. This bound manuscript is dated 1899, while a Typographia Scoto-Gadelica, by D. Maclean, was published in 1915 (a digitized copy is available on the National Library of Scotland website; see External Documents below). Mackinnon appears to have added notes and later publications.
Bound volume, containing catalogue of Gaelic publications, Late 19th century
Bound volume, containing catalogue of Gaelic publications, Late 19th century
This appears to be a more complex catalogue than the previous item in this collection (A.31). There are notices of authors and translators of books published in Gaelic or books that deal with the subjects of the Gaelic language, Gaelic culture, or Highland people. There are also some books dealing with Celtic subject matter. Interspersed throughout the book are letters and newspaper cuttings. Much of the book is blank, and there are no notes after ff. 156.
Bundle of papers of different sizes with unrelated contents, 18th-19th century
Collection of Original Letters and Verses of Robert Burns, 2nd half of the 18th century
Collection of original letters and verses by Robert Burns.
'Elements of Gaelic Grammar' by Stewart. Bound printed book, 1812
This is a copy of the published printed Gaelic grammar 'Elements of Gaelic grammar', written by Alexander Stewart, published in Edinburgh in 1812. The book is interspersed with notes by Donald Mackinnon himself.
Extract from the National Library of Scotland, Late 19th or early 20th century
Extract from the National Library of Scotland 72.i.7, fol.XIb, col.i, lines 12 to 38. This extract is headed 'Dubfocail and so', and appears to be a list of words in old or middle Gaellic, with translations given in an antiquated spelling of modern Scottish Gaelic (and definitely not contemporary spelling of modern Scottish Gaelic around the turn of the 20th century).
Gaelic dictionary. A-B., 18th century
A manuscripted dictionary, which appears to be the first part of a series of dictionaries. It appears to have become separated from the original document because the section B ends at baile, which is recorded in this document as meaning 'a deluge of water' in English. Its author is unknown.
